The Guidebook To A Luxurious Safari Retreat: Garonga Safari Co. MCH Private Tented Lodge

At Safari365, we believe that firsthand knowledge is invaluable when crafting unforgettable journeys for our clients. Recently, Maxine, one of our dedicated travel consultants, had the opportunity to explore Garonga Safari Co MCH Private Tented Lodge, in South Africa’s greater Makalali Game Reserve.

    Logistics

Airlink flight Cape town to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport on our way to our Garonga Safari.

Our adventure began with a 2.5 hour Airlink from the beautiful Cape Town. Despite the rainy arrival, Airlink’s thoughtful gesture of providing umbrellas to every passenger made us feel truly cared for. Airlink’s seamless service must have made the short flight a breeze, and arriving at Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport always feels like stepping into the heart of the bush.

Stunning wildlife can be found just outside the accommodation at the lodge.

From there, we were off to Makalali Private Nature Reserve, a gem offering incredible wildlife experiences and beautiful landscapes. The anticipation of safari adventures and the unique charm of this private reserve was exhilarating.

The journey from the airport to the lodge offered glimpses of the adventure awaiting us—an authentic, intimate safari experience. The drive took around 4.5 hours for us, so I would rather fly into Hoedspruit (Eastgate Airport) which is 1.5 hours by road transfer.

Best Option For Getting TO Camp: Flight & Road Transfer

Take a commercial flight with Airlink or CemAir to Hoedspruit from Johannesburg (1hr) or Cape Town (2hr 30min). Road Transfers would be arranged with our travel experts from the airports. Air Charters from Hoedspruit to Garonga’s airstrip are also possible (20 minute flight).

After entering Makalali Private Nature Reserve, we arrived at Garonga Safari Camp which is approximately 45 minutes away. The Garonga Safari Co. has 3 properties namely Garonga Safari Camp, Little Garonga Safari Lodge and MCH Private Tented Camp. We were lucky enough to stay at the latter.

Arrival At The Garonga Safari MCH Camp

I love the location, as it is on a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. Our time at Garonga Safari MCH Camp began with a warm welcome from a friendly staff member who immediately made us feel at home. The efficient check-in process, including a brief orientation and completing an electronic indemnity form, set the tone for a smooth and relaxing stay.

As it was raining, the staff provided umbrellas and escorted us to our room to freshen up after a day of traveling. Their attention to detail and care made a fantastic first impression.

Shortly after settling in, we were shown to the dining area, where a delicious spread was prepared for us—a perfect start to our adventure in the bush.

    Accommodation

Garonga Safari MCH offers 4 luxury air-conditioned en-suite canvas tents.

One of my favorite features was being able to open the canvas walls at night, letting the soothing sounds and smells of the bush fill the room as I slept. It was pure magic to fall asleep under a blanket of stars with the wild as my lullaby.

The most extraordinary moment was waking up to an unusual sound—grunting and the rolling of rocks just outside our tent. Intrigued, I ran to the tent nets and was absolutely blown away to see a giraffe passing by! I’d never experienced anything like it before—it was unforgettable.

    Luxury tent a the camp.
    Activities

One of the highlights of our stay was the exhilarating game drives and walking safaris. Our experienced guide expertly navigated the diverse landscapes, sharing their knowledge of the local wildlife and ecology. The tented camp has its own game drive vehicle and guide. We were fortunate to encounter a variety of animals, including majestic elephants and giraffes. After a thrilling afternoon of a wet but great game drive, we retreated to the serene main lodge.

Stunning wildlife can be found just outside the accommodation at the lodge.

    Highlights

    • This vast 27,000-hectare reserve, shared only with Makalali Safari Lodge, provided an unparalleled sense of seclusion and immersion in the African wilderness.
    • Garonga Safari MCH Camp exceeded our expectations in every way. The combination of luxurious accommodations, exceptional service, and breathtaking wildlife encounters made for an unforgettable safari experience.

  •  The Guidebook to Simbavati River Lodge

The Guidebook to Simbavati River Lodge

With over 15 years of experience, Andrew Sinclair, one of our African Travel Experts, specialises in creating bespoke African safari itineraries. On a recent familiarisation trip to Simbavati River Lodge in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, he explored its exceptional offerings and unforgettable game drives. Here, Andrew shares his insights and top tips for an extraordinary safari in South Africa‘s Greater Kruger region.

    About Simbavati River Lodge

Simbavati River Lodge is idyllically located along the banks of the Nhlaralumi River in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, part of the prestigious Greater Kruger National Park. Renowned for its intimate safari experience, the lodge offers exceptional access to Big Five game viewing while seamlessly blending luxury, comfort, and an authentic safari atmosphere. A standout feature is its lively waterhole, set just below the dining deck, where guests can unwind in a plush deck chair and enjoy sightings of diverse wildlife, including majestic herds of elephants.

    Upon Arrival

We arrived at the lodge around midday and were welcomed with a delicious light lunch and refreshing beverages. The menu was written on a blackboard and we were served greek salad, beef burger slides, coleslaw salad and a side portion of hot chips.  I really enjoyed sitting on the dining deck as it overlooks the Nhlaralumi River and an active waterhole.

After receiving an orientation of the lodge and its facilities, we completed the necessary formalities and were shown through to our luxury tent. We took a moment to relax, before embarking on an unforgettable evening game drive.

beautifully presented lunch spread on a wooden table, featuring Greek salad, beef burger sliders, coleslaw salad, crispy hot chips, and refreshing beverages at Simbavati River Lodge.

    Afternoon of Arrival

Within just 30 minutes, our expert guide, Happy, and tracker led us to an incredible sight—a lioness on a fresh zebra kill. Witnessing this powerful moment in nature’s circle of life was truly awe-inspiring.

A pair of lions feeding on a recent kill in a dry, sparse savannah landscape with leafless trees under a clear blue sky at Simbavati River Lodge.
We witnessed an incredible lion kill during our game drive.

That evening, we returned to the lodge for a magical boma dinner under the stars. The lodge alternates between an à la carte menu and traditional boma dinners, and this particular evening was a treat. A boma is a circular enclosure, originally crafted from branches, that offers a campfire-style dining experience. The boma at Simbavati River Lodge is especially enchanting, adorned with lanterns and soft lighting that create an unforgettable atmosphere. We enjoyed a wide selection of memorable dishes served buffet-style. Dining in the boma is an authentic safari experience and most of the meals were cooked on the open fire.

What made the evening even more special was sharing dinner with our guide, Happy. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more, exchange stories, and reflect on the incredible moments from our game drive.

An outdoor dining deck at sunset, with elegantly set tables and lanterns, overlooking a tranquil river and surrounded by lush trees.

    Accommodation

The lodge caters to a wide range of travellers, from honeymoon couples (40% off for one partner on honeymoon) to families, with a variety of accommodation options to suit everyone’s needs. Guests can choose from two tented pool suites, six luxury safari tents, and three two-bedroom family chalets—truly offering something for everyone. Each accommodation features a private veranda overlooking the riverbed, en-suite bathrooms, and modern amenities to ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay.

In addition to its exceptional accommodation, Simbavati River Lodge also boasts a pool, a lounge, a dining area, and a bar, providing plenty of opportunities to unwind and enjoy your surroundings.

View from a lodge room bed looking out to a private deck with chairs and a table, overlooking a peaceful savannah where an elephant is grazing under a bright blue sky.
Stunning views of the riverbed from our room, where we spotted an elephant.

    Activities

The Timbavati Nature Reserve, located next to the renowned Kruger National Park, shares unfenced borders, allowing for exceptional game viewing, particularly for those eager to see the Big Five. The game drives, both morning and evening, are truly spectacular.

In addition to these drives, Simbavati River Lodge offers a range of activities, including bush walks, birdwatching, and photographic safaris. These unique experiences provide an even deeper connection to the wilderness and are something I would love to explore further on a return visit.

Although we didn’t have time, there is a safari spa and fully-equipped fitness centre in-house. I recommend pre-booking a relaxing massage or beauty treatment in between safari activities.

Top Travel Tips When Exploring the Greater Kruger Region

    • Accessibility: Simbavati River Lodge is accessible via a road transfer from Hoedspruit Airport. The Safari365 travel experts will arrange for a road transfer.

    • Best Time to Visit: The dry season (May to October) is ideal for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources. However, the green season (November to March) offers lush landscapes, fewer visitors, and great birding opportunities.

    • Experiences: Aside from game drives, I highly recommend spending an afternoon at the lodge’s lookout point to observe wildlife at the riverbed. For keen photographers, a private photographic safari is well worth it. Lastly, don’t miss out on a guided bush walk for a closer look at the flora and fauna.

    • Stay Duration: A minimum of 3-nights is recommended to fully enjoy the lodge’s offerings and maximise your chances of seeing the Big Five. They do however offer a stay 4 pay 3 from 6 January – 31 March and 1 November – 20 December.

    Overall Thoughts

The Greater Kruger region is an ideal destination for both first-time and seasoned safari enthusiasts, particularly those keen to experience the Big Five. Simbavati River Lodge offers an excellent balance of exhilarating game drives alongside slower-paced safari options, perfect for those seeking a more relaxed experience.
Simbavati River Lodge is a great option for families as it has a Cubs Club Kids Centre that provides engaging programs for children, ensuring a memorable stay for all ages.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our incredible guide, Happy, and all the staff at the lodge. Their exceptional hospitality made it feel like a true home away from home. I eagerly look forward to the opportunity to visit this wonderful lodge again in the future.

When we arrived, a light lunch and a brief orientation set the tone for the incredible adventure ahead. Our ranger’s enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the wilderness, paired with the sharp-eyed expertise of our tracker, made every game drive an unforgettable experience. On our very first drive, we saw hippos basking in the sun, hyenas on the prowl, and two rhinos grazing alongside a herd of buffalo. The highlight? Watching a majestic herd of elephants cross our path, complete with playful calves clumsily following their mothers. We even enjoyed sundowners while observing the rhinos—an absolutely magical moment. We stopped for drinks and snacks and these were very welcome!

The food was exceptional—every meal, crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, was a true delight. Meals include cooked or continental breakfast, mid-afternoon meals, and 3-course dinners served on decks overlooking the Klaserie River. We did hear that some other guests enjoyed seeing elephants in the river bed below the lounge deck while they were eating breakfast.

Meals are served in the indoor dining room, on the outdoor viewing decks (weather permitting) or in the traditional boma.

I can recommend relaxing in the lodge’s combination of bar/library/lounge with a refreshing cocktail prior to a delicious dinner.

    Experiences

The lodge offers the perfect balance between thrilling safaris and moments of relaxation. With amenities like an infinity pool, yoga mats in the rooms, gym weights in the room and a charming safari deck, unwinding between activities was effortless. The Guidebook to Kings Camp Private Game Reserve

Kings Camp, part of the premier Seasons in Africa collection, hosted Stephanie, one of our valued travel consultants, on her recent safari adventure in South Africa. In her firsthand account, she provides a detailed narrative of her stay.

STEPHANIE WITH OTHER TRAVEL CONSULTANTS FROM SAFARI365 at Kings Camp
Stephanie, along with the other travel consultants from Safari365.

    On Arrival

At Kings Camp, you step into a space providing a classic old world safari experience. It immediately reminded me of my arrival, when I previously stayed at the Royal Livingstone Hotel in Livingstone, Zambia. We were met by the friendly staff – Patricia, Licia and Warren. They provided a refreshing beverage of soda and lime cordial, while we checked in at reception.

We decided to head to lunch first, so that we could spend more time exploring the main lodge. Lunch was an option of a traditional bobotie served in a miniature “potjie” pot or a shrimp; avocado and anchovy wrap with a fruit salad and potato wedges. For dessert we had an option of a fruit smoothie or a mango sorbet. It was all very delicious.

The reception area at Kings Camp.

    Accommodation

Kings Camp excels in combining luxury with natural beauty, creating an immersive and tranquil atmosphere for guests. The thoughtful details—like the private plunge pool, a harmonious colour palette with lush greens in the rooms, and the elegant touches of dark wood and gold—showcase a perfect balance of sophistication and comfort.

The bathroom setup, featuring a clawfoot bath, dual basins, and a secluded outdoor shower, offered a deeply relaxing and unique retreat, adding to the sense of tropical serenity. The personalised Kings Camp branded water bottle and the animal print scarf are lovely souvenirs, allowing guests to take a piece of the safari spirit home. It’s a perfect example of how Kings Camp provides guests with memorable luxury, embracing the natural landscape and aesthetic.

    Experiences

We met in the lounge for drinks before we headed out for our first 4 pm afternoon game drive, where we met our guide-Cynet and tracker-Sonnyboy, before heading to the 4×4 safari vehicle. The sightings on the afternoon safari were incredible. First we saw 3 white rhinos. The experienced guide said we had to take a short drive to a special sighting but due to the nature of the sighting there was only 1 vehicle permitted. On the way we passed a large herd of elephants, before spotting a hippo sitting in a shallow pool of water. Continuing on the drive down to the riverbed, we stumbled upon a lioness and her 3-cubs lazing in the shade. The next sighting was a leopard hiding in the tall grass. About 15 minutes later we saw a cheetah. We tracked her for some time before she disappeared into the tall grass. The drive ended with memorable sundowners including snacks and drinks.

While waiting for the other guests to return from the afternoon game drive, I went to the newly built hide, which has become a great attraction for guests. There is a livecam at the hide, so guests can use the link to watch some of their favourite animals at the active waterhole.

The Safari365 team on their evening game drive.

The morning game drive started off with a large herd of buffalo, we were able to see quite a few different species of owl and eagles. A first for me was seeing a pack of hyenas with their young. The smaller pups were black in colour while the older pups had already developed some spots. They had made their home in an old termite mound. We then continued on for a coffee stop, before heading back to the lodge for breakfast. Warren met us for breakfast, he shared the story of him starting at the lodge as a guide before he met and married Licia. He also explained how the surrounding land was a meeting place for all the chief’s in neighbouring villages. The ground at which Kings Camp stands today was the neutral ground for these chief’s and this is how the lodge got its name. Him and his wife, Licia have been managing and living at the lodge since they got married, they also raised their two children there. Their son, a world-renowned photographer and their daughter a promising cricket player.

    Dining

On the night we stayed, we enjoyed a Boma dinner. This is a quintessential safari experience, blending traditional African dining with the unique ambiance of the bush. Set under the stars and surrounded by the warmth of a crackling fire, the Boma offers a rustic, open-air setting that immerses guests in the natural sounds and scents of the African wilderness.

    The stir-fry at Kings Camp.

    The menu consisted of:

    • A starter of creamy mushroom soup.
    • A buffet of fresh salads, vegetables and dressings.
    • A choice of grilled chicken espetada or ostrich fillet.
    • Also the first I’ve seen on safari – a stir-fry station! There was a choice of kudu fillet or calamari strips in the stir fry. All paired with sweet and sour sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce and sweet chilli sauce.
    • A chef also assisted us with the selection of vegetables to our requirements.
    • Dessert was a peach cobbler topped with cream.

We were escorted back to our room and I had the best night’s sleep!

Breakfast was a choice of a traditional breakfast, a continental breakfast with an assortment of cold meats and smoked salmon and eggs benedict. They also served freshly baked croissants with butter, marmalade and jam. Warren also mentioned that the lodge will soon undergo a refurbishment of the upper deck area and main dining area.

    Highlights

    • Kings Camp offers speciality services such as photographic safaris, where photographers from all over the world come to Kings Camp for photo opportunities at the hide.
    • They offer vegan safaris where a vegan consultant comes to the lodge to completely change the room to a vegan friendly room. This is where they remove all animal products including the amenities, the animal skin rugs and any other animal product that might be deemed offensive. The guests will also be served the same style menus throughout their stay but with exclusive vegan options.
    • They also cater for a Kosher safari. The lodge has a full service Kosher kitchen, which has been sealed by a Rabbi. Should the guests book the safari, the rabbi will be brought in to do the necessary protocol for the food preparation. Only the Rabbi can break the seal to the Kosher kitchen.
    • Dedicated sommelier.
    • Private plunge pool at each room.

    Overall Thoughts?

Overall Kings Camp is spectacular. Everything from the game drives, the rooms, the service, the food and especially the staff! Just as they greeted us with a warm welcome, they sent us off with a fond farewell.

I would like to thank our great hosts – Patricia, Licia and Warren and of course Cynet and Sonnyboy for bringing the game drives to life! Their passion, knowledge, and storytelling surely made each wildlife encounter unforgettable, transforming the safari into a captivating adventure. Their keen eyes and understanding of the bush must have added depth to every sighting, allowing guests to see the beauty and excitement of the African wilderness from a new perspective.

The Guidebook to Thornybush Game Reserve’s Kamara House

Charles Howie, one of our African Travel Experts, recently spent time in Thornybush Game Reserve, which borders Kruger National Park in South Africa, where he visited Kamara House. This reserve, in the Greater Kruger area, offers exceptional wildlife viewing and an unparalleled luxury experience. Find out more about his experience, insights, and recommendations for those visiting this area.

Charles, enjoying his morning coffee while out on a game drive.

    About Thornybush Game Reserve

I have been visiting the Kruger area on family holidays since my youth, but this was my first visit to the beautiful Thornybush Game Reserve. This region is a favourite among travellers for its renowned wildlife viewing and luxurious accommodations, characteristic of the Greater Kruger area.

The Thornybush Group, established in 1961, was among the first commercial lodges in the Greater Kruger area. It now operates within both the Thornybush and Sabi Sands Private Nature Reserves. In 2017, Thornybush Nature Reserve removed its fences adjacent to the world-famous Kruger National Park, allowing new herds of wildlife to roam freely across the 15,000-hectare reserve. This is one of the many reasons for its enduring popularity.

A Safari Option for Every Traveller

One of the reasons Thornybush is such a popular safari destination is its easy accessibility from both Johannesburg and Cape Town. A short direct flight lands you at Hoedspruit Airport, the nearest to the reserve. From there, a one-hour road transfer takes you to the lodge. Alternatively, if your budget permits, you could charter a flight directly to the reserve’s airstrip, which not only shortens the journey but also provides an aerial view of the incredible landscapes.

Another reason safari enthusiasts favour this reserve is the variety of lodges available, catering to every style and preference. These range from tented accommodations like Thornybush Saseka to more permanent structures like Thornybush Game Lodge.

    A Home Away From Home

During my educational visit, I had the pleasure of staying at the stunning Kamara House. Opened in May 2023, Kamara House is the newest addition to the Thornybush Nature Reserve. This exclusive-use house overlooks a small riverbed, providing the perfect spot for wildlife viewing right from the comfort of your deck. The accommodation also features a fire pit and a private plunge pool.

The stay includes services from a private chef and butler, who ensure that all your needs are met. I enjoyed a truly magnificent meal under the African sky, surrounded by the crackle of the fire and the glow of candlelight. The menu featured delicious dishes such as a mouthwatering tempura prawn cocktail, succulent lamb shank, and decadent chocolate mousse, all accompanied by superb local wines.

I would highly recommend Kamara House for multigenerational families or small groups. Its exclusive use means you have the entire accommodation to yourselves, and the ample space and various rooms make it particularly suited for these groups.

Up Close With Wildlife in Thornybush Game Reserve

Thornybush Game Reserve offers an incredible wildlife experience with a range of activities to experience it. You can choose from morning and evening game drives as well as guided bush walks, which is great for spotting the smaller animals and creatures that make up this vibrant ecosystem. Each of these activities are led by expert guides and trackers which the reserve has some of the best.

We had the opportunity to do a morning and evening game drive which I would highly recommend doing both as your sightings will vary depending on the time of day. We had a wonderful guide named Tracy, who is renowned as one of the best guides in the country and serves as the head guide in the northern Thornybush area. Accompanying us on our game drives was Orlando, a tracker with about 30 years of experience, who certainly did not disappoint.

Our adventure began with the tracking of an old leopard along the river bank, where we also encountered elephants en route. Tracy then teased that she had something special in store for us, keeping us in suspense as we navigated the pristine bush. Just 20 minutes later, we were treated to the sight of a pack of 8 wild dogs. Seeing this highly endangered and rarely sighted species was truly magical. We spent about an hour tracking these incredible animals, making for an unforgettable experience.

The following morning, we headed out again. After spotting a variety of herbivores, we noticed several vultures circling in the distance. Recognising this as a sign of a recent kill nearby, we followed the birds and discovered a big male lion feasting on a freshly killed old buffalo. He was soon joined by four lionesses, another 2 males, and 8 cubs of various ages. Observing the pride’s interactions was an incredible experience, offering a unique insight into their dynamics.

Thronybush Game Reserve offers incredible wildlife experiences.

    Overall Thoughts of Your Stay?

With so much to experience in this beautiful location, I recommend staying for no less than three nights. This duration allows guests ample time to relax by the pool, indulge in a spa treatment, or enjoy an armchair safari from the comfort of their room. Additionally, you will be treated to a variety of dining options, including a boma dinner around the fire, a dinner in the bush, or even a private dinner on your suite’s deck. Moreover, the longer you stay, the stronger the bond you’ll form with your guide and tracker, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of the bush’s wonders.

5 Tips for Visiting the Greater Kruger

    • While many travellers choose to visit the area in August and September, I personally prefer to visit in April, May and June. Not only is the weather warmer, but the dry conditions ensure great visibility for wildlife sighting.
    • Stay for at least 3 nights to fully experience the reserve and enjoy the activities on offer, such as bushwalks and spa experiences. Travellers visiting for only 2 nights often miss out on experiences or feel rushed.
    • Don’t be shy to ask questions! Your guide has a wealth of knowledge about the bush, and taking advantage of the engagements with them will deepen your understanding of the bush and its wildlife, and give you a richer experience.
    • Avoid self driving to your lodge: Unless you are very familiar with the area, I would not recommend hiring a car and driving yourself from the airport. Not only is GPS signal patchy, but you are also likely to have to navigate dirt roads. Rather make use of a transfer company for your safety and peace of mind.
    • Pack warm clothing, even in summer. While temperatures can soar during the hotter months, you are still likely to feel chilly on morning game drives before they sun has fully risen. A jacket or extra layer will go a long way to keeping you feeling comfortable.

  • The Guidebook to Travel Trends 2025

The Guidebook to Travel Trends: 2025

For travellers, following travel trends can make their journeys more fulfilling, personalised, and meaningful, catering to the evolving preferences of modern travellers.

    Sustainable and Ethical Choices

With sustainable travel on the rise, travellers now have more options to align their journeys with their values. From staying at eco-friendly lodges to supporting community initiatives, travellers can enjoy experiences that not only respect the environment but also uplift local communities. Many lodges are embracing sustainable practices, including energy-saving measures, waste reduction, and the use of locally sourced materials and products.

Additionally, the use of electric safari vehicles and boats is growing, providing a cleaner, lower-emission alternative that allows travellers to experience nature with a lighter footprint. By choosing these options, our clients can contribute to the welfare of the places they visit while enjoying meaningful and responsible travel experiences.

Recommended lodges that offer electric transportation:

    • Chobe Game Lodge, Botswana
    • Ila Safari Lodge, Zambia
    • Chisa Busanga Camp, Zambia

Travelling sustainably helps preserve destinations for future generations while enriching the travel experience.

    Enhanced Convenience & Comfort

Technology trends such as mobile booking, digital check-ins, and virtual tour previews make travel planning easier and more convenient. These tools simplify each part of the journey, from booking to exploring a destination, ensuring our clients avoid common logistical issues and enjoy a smoother experience. Features like online check-in, contactless payments, and digital health records also add reassurance and ease, especially in today’s travel environment. These advancements allow our clients to spend less time managing details and more time enjoying their trip, making the experience both secure and comfortable. Features like online check-in, contactless payments, and digital health passports add a layer of security and convenience, especially in the post-COVID landscape.

    Safety & Health Awareness

Trends often mirror current safety standards, which are especially valuable after recent pandemics. Our clients can keep up-to-date with our detailed first-hand information and can choose destinations and activities that offer health and safety measures for a greater sense of security. COVID heightened awareness around personal health and wellness, leading many travellers to prioritise safer options like private transport, open-air activities, and contactless services. These choices help protect well-being and make for a more comfortable travel experience.

    Increased Value & Special Deals

We feel that our clients are looking for more great deals, innovative packages, and added benefits, like exclusive discounts. By staying current, our clients get more value for their investment with our value adds or special deals. We feature many special offers on our website and also provide annual exclusive Black Friday offers. We also have a loyalty program for loyal clients, that helps deepen the connection and provides even further benefits.

    Unique, Off-the-Beaten-Path Experiences

Our team provides unique experiences, such as remote eco-lodges and cultural tours. Choosing these options helps our clients avoid busy tourist spots and enjoy more genuine, memorable adventures. We find many of our clients want to escape the typical tourist scenes and experience a destination’s true character. Discovering hidden gems or exploring lesser-known locations makes travellers feel special and that the trip is more tailored for them.

    Recommended Properties:

    • Sand River Selous, Tanzania
    • Simbavati Cederberg Ridge, South Africa
    • Wildtracks Eco Safari Lodge, Botswana

    Cultural Immersions

This is a prominent travel trend for 2025. We see that our clients are increasingly seeking authentic experiences that allow them to deeply engage with local cultures, traditions, and communities. This shift reflects a desire for meaningful connections and a move away from traditional tourist activities. Destinations like East Africa are known not just for safaris but also for rich cultural interactions. This can also form part of ‘slow travel’ which was a trend in 2023 and into this year, which is a way to connect more deeply with local communities and traditions.

    Recommended Lodges:

    Workcation

A workcation blends work and vacation, allowing people to travel to new places while continuing to work remotely. As remote work becomes more common, more people have the freedom to work from various locations. This flexibility lets them enjoy new environments while managing work responsibilities, often boosting productivity and creativity. After years of working from home, many are ready for a change, and workcations offer an ideal way to explore different cultures and settings without needing long breaks from work. Workcations offer a refreshing alternative, letting people explore new cultures and settings without taking extended time off, meeting a desire for novelty and travel.

Many destinations now cater to remote workers by offering co-working spaces, reliable internet, and facilities that make it easy to work while travelling.
South Africa has recently introduced a Digital Nomad Visa.

Cape Town, South Africa, has become a hotspot for digital nomads.

    Skillcation

A skillcation is a type of holiday, where our clients focus on learning or developing new skills while exploring a new destination. Unlike traditional holidays, which centre on relaxation and sightseeing, skillcations blend leisure travel with educational experiences, offering a meaningful, growth-oriented approach to travel. For example, visitors might take cooking classes to learn regional cuisine, participate in pottery workshops, or engage in language classes to improve local language skills. This travel trend appeals to clients looking to come back from their bush and beach holiday with more than just memories.

    Phenomena Tourism

We see that our clients are planning trips around rare or natural events and phenomena, such as witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa or the Zebra Migration in Botswana. This trend is driven by a desire for awe-inspiring, once-in-a-lifetime experiences (bucket lists) that offer deep connections to the natural world. Social sharing has further encouraged our clients to pursue exciting, photogenic destinations and activities, adding destinations like African safaris.

    Some other examples include:

    • Dark Sky Reserve, Namibia for stargazing
    • Bat migration, Zambia from October to December
    • Flamingo Migration at Lake Nakuru in Kenya and Lake Natron in Tanzania
    • Okavango Delta flooding, Botswana

  •  The Guidebook to Lemala Camps & Lodges

One of our dedicated team members was invited by Lemala Camps & Lodges to experience many of their offerings first-hand. The stay allowed for an in-depth evaluation of the accommodations, services, and overall guest experience. Below is her detailed feedback, offering valuable insights into how Lemala aligns with our standards at Safari365 and how it can enhance the safari experiences we curate for our clients.

This was my 3rd time in Tanzania in the last 14 years. I never tire of it and I am excited to have you read my feedback.

    About Lemala Camps & Lodges

Lemala Camps and Lodges is a well-regarded luxury safari company with locations throughout Tanzania as well as in Uganda. Their exclusive tented camps and lodges are situated in some of the country’s most renowned wildlife areas, including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire, as well as along Uganda’s River Nile. Lemala is committed to sustainable tourism, reducing its environmental impact and supporting local communities. The majority of their staff are locals, ensuring an authentic experience for guests. Each property offers a perfect balance between immersion in nature and the comfort and high-quality service guests expect.

    Lemala Hammerkop House

The first stop was Lemala Hammerkop House, situated on the outskirts of Arusha, the gateway for anyone embarking on a northern circuit safari in Tanzania. This charming property features four en suite bedrooms and offers an all-inclusive experience, covering meals and drinks. The dedicated and attentive staff ensure that all guests’ needs, including dietary preferences, are well taken care of, making it an ideal place to unwind after a long international flight or before returning home.

Set within a vast estate, Hammerkop House provides a variety of activities for guests. Options include canoeing on the Momella Lakes, day trips to Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, scenic helicopter flights to view Kilimanjaro, golfing, mountain biking, and horse riding. For those looking to relax, the estate’s tranquil gardens and inviting pool offer the perfect setting to enjoy a refreshing drink and take in the serene surroundings.

    Lemala Mpingo Ridge

Our next stop was Lemala Mpingo Ridge, set in the hills of Tarangire National Park, providing stunning views from the main area, its large pool, and the spacious rooms, which feature both indoor and outdoor showers.

The highlight for many is the romantic bathtub on the balcony. Alongside the traditional game drives, activities include night drives, hot air ballooning, sundowners, private dining under the stars, and visits to the nearby Chief Lebolo Community. Chief Lebolo, a young leader, championed education for girls in his community and, despite challenges, demonstrated resilience by improving local infrastructure. Some community members are employed by Lemala, showcasing their dedication to excellent service and personal growth.

    Lemala Ngorongoro Camp

Leaving Tarangire behind, we made our way to Lemala Ngorongoro Camp, perfectly positioned on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. The camp’s tents are nestled within a beautiful forest of towering trees, creating a serene, almost heavenly atmosphere. During our stay, we were treated to a surprise lunch on the crater floor, a memorable experience that can be arranged for our clients as well at an additional cost. The lunch provides a culinary indulgence and the backdrop of scenic beauty. I highly recommend adding this to your next Tanzania safari with Safari365.

    Lemala Nanyukie

From here we ventured to the Serengeti National Park and we were fortunate to witness part of the migrating herds heading south. We visited Lemala Ewanjan Tented Camp, where the views from the suite’s private decks were breathtaking! Then we stopped at Lemala Nanyukie. Both camps offer a luxurious experience in one of the country’s premier locations for game drives. I really was impressed with the private plunge pools at Nanyukie!

The next morning, there was another highlight – a magical hot air balloon safari experience over the awe-inspiring Serengeti. This is an early start, but so well worth it! Before heading back to the camp, we had a delicious champagne breakfast in the bush.

    Lemala Kuria Hills

Next on our Lemala Camps & Lodges itinerary was a light aircraft flight to Kogatende airstrip, from where we visited Lemala Kuria Hills in northern Serengeti. Its rocky mountains are home to a joyful pride of lions and like Lemala Nanyukie – each spacious suite has a private plunge pool. I really loved the glass-fronted tents and the outdoor showers. This lodge is also all about location location location. The lodge offers front-row access to one of nature’s greatest spectacles—the river crossings of the Mara River during the Great Wildebeest Migration.

    Lemala Wildwaters

My last stop was in Uganda, only 3 hours from the capital Entebbe. Located in the Kalangala Island is Lemala Wildwaters and yes it is in the middle of the Nile River. You can either sleep hearing the rapids or choose one of the rooms on the quiet side of the island. The pool is one of the most Instagrammed places in the entire world and you can have a drink while you hear the birds and the water and see the sunset on the famous Nile River. What a way to end the most amazing few days with fantastic hosts from Lemala Camps & Lodges.

We also visited the Adrift River Club, a 3-star superior property offering ample space and breathtaking views of the Nile. The rooms are nestled within a vast forest, making it an ideal option for families and groups. Conveniently located near the activities hub, guests can enjoy a variety of adventures, including rafting, kayaking, fishing, horse riding, stand-up paddleboarding, and visits to the local community.

One of the greatest lessons I brought home was imparted by the incredible Tanzanian people. Their deep connection with nature grants them a profound understanding of time. They recognize that you cannot rush nature, which brings them a sense of peace and a more relaxed pace in all they do, while still delivering exceptional hospitality and service. They have a remarkable ability to distinguish between what truly requires immediate attention and what is simply nature taking its course.

    Thank You

Thank you to Lemala Camps & Lodges for the opportunity to visit your luxury tented camps, permanent lodges and seasonal camps in some of the most iconic wildlife regions. I can honestly say that each and every one of your staff provide highly personalized service and the guides are true experts. Our clients can enjoy 4-8 night circuit offers or a 9 night circuit offer.

I would love to be back to Tanzania for a 4th time and I am available to take you there too!
