Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak and the world’s largest freestanding mountain, rises approximately 5,895 metres from the vast African plains. Its snow-capped summit, astonishingly close to the equator, has provided many photographers with the iconic image we all cherish.
Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo, the highest peak, remains dormant with no immediate threat of eruption.
You can view Mount Kilimanjaro from Tanzania, where it is visible from the towns of Arusha and Moshi, or from Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, famous for its breathtaking views of the mountain. However, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is only possible from Tanzania.
Kilimanjaro National Park, encompassing the mountain, covers an area of approximately 753 square kilometres. In addition to being a national park, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
