Located in northwest Uganda, the park covers around 3,500 square kilometres and forms part of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, along with the neighbouring Karuma Wildlife Reserve. This densely forested region is bisected by the mighty Nile River.
The park’s most spectacular sight is Murchison Falls, where the Nile is forced through a narrow 7-metre gap in the rock face, plummeting 43 metres. This creates a dramatic explosion of white water, the most powerful natural water flow in the world.
While the falls are the main attraction, the park also offers excellent game viewing. It is home to four of the Big Five, excluding rhinos, which are slowly being reintroduced after being poached from the area. Other abundant species include buffalo, hippos, and crocodiles lounging on the riverbanks. The park also offers exceptional birdwatching, with the rare shoebill stork being a highlight.
