Levels of Accommodation
You can choose from various types of accommodation during your Great Wildebeest Migration safari, including value 3*, mid-range 4*, and luxury 5*. We also recommend migration camps.
Mobile Versus Permanent Safari Camps
Mobile Camps
Mobile camps move with the herds throughout the season, keeping you close to the prime wildebeest action. They offer an intimate safari experience, often with smaller guest numbers. With a strong focus on wildlife, these camps allow you to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness without the distractions of extensive amenities.
Mobile camps still provide comfortable tents with en-suite bathrooms, but luxury facilities like spas or swimming pools are usually not available. You are usually guaranteed to see the migration as these camps move with the seasons and have a minimum of 2 locations.
Permanent Camps
Permanent camps sometimes offer additional amenities like swimming pools, spas, and laundry services. They operate year-round, allowing for safaris outside the migration season. Often situated in scenic locations, these camps provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, even if they do not directly follow the herds out of migration season.

Depending on which aspect of the migration you wish to experience, there are peak times for viewing:
Calving season
If you’re interested in seeing wildebeest calves, December to March is the best time to visit the southern Serengeti.
River crossings
The dramatic crossings of the Mara River typically occur between July and October.
Overall migration
While you can witness the herds throughout the year, the period from April to October is generally considered the best time to see the large-scale movement across the plains.
