Maun
Gateway to Okavango

The town of Maun is the third largest in Botswana. It is an eclectic mix of modern buildings and native huts. There are shopping malls, banks, restaurants, a few hotels and some happening bars. Maun is the tourism capital of Botswana and the administrative centre of Ngamiland. It is also the headquarters of numerous safari and air-charter operations.

Regular provision of almost anything can be bought in this town, and the town boasts several good shopping centres, filling stations, a range of hotels and lodges as well as a variety of car and 4 x 4 vehicle hire.

Travelling
To Maun

Most tourists enter the Okavango through Maun, situated at the gateway to the Delta and Moremi Game Reserve. Maun International Airport which was officially opened in 1996 after extensive renovations, is serviced by Air Botswana and there are direct flights to Johannesburg in South Africa.

However, most of the air traffic is associated with ferrying travellers to the many lodges in the area and the ever popular game flights. The Maun Airport is one of the busiest airports in Southern Africa, when one takes into the number of flight arrivals and departures per hour.

Highlights
In Maun

It is not for nothing that this town is known as “The Gate to the Okavango Delta.” Its location makes the small town a perfect starting point for tours into the largest inland delta of our planet. If you choose this destination as the start or stopover for your delta trip, you can look forward to a wide range of leisure activities that will enable you to get to know the city and the surrounding area. Maun also provides an authentic insight into the “real” Africa, as the cityscape is dominated by barracks and clay huts which are scattered and at a greater distance from each other. There are no large tourist centres and hotel resorts, although there are some modern shopping facilities and office buildings.
