Botswana Landscapes
Places to Go
in Botswana
Botswana landscapes, with the largest concentration of elephants on the African continent, incredibly diverse wildlife, and a strong focus on eco-tourism, make Botswana a safari-goer’s dream.
From the winding waterways of the Okavango Delta to the stark beauty of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, the landscapes are as diverse as they are stunning. We have put together a gallery of six breathtaking Botswana landscapes for you to explore.
Chobe & Chobe River
Woodlands Marsh & Floodplains
Botswana’s second-largest national park and one of the most popular stops on the Botswana Safari circuit. The Chobe Riverfront is also an amazing place for wildlife viewing during Botswana’s dry season from May to September.
Okavango Delta
Inland Delta
Another of Botswana’s most popular safari destinations, the Okavango Delta, is a stunning highlight of Botswana landscapes. Named the 1000th UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, it offers exceptional game viewing opportunities, especially from a mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) as a guide navigates you through the winding waters of the delta.
Makgadikgadi Pans
Salt Pans & Seasonal Wetlands
Makgadikgadi Pans is a place of peace and solitude in the North-East of Botswana. While the pans fill up slightly with water during the summer rains, the best time to visit is just after they have dried up. The landscape becomes hauntingly barren until the arrival of the next summer’s rains.
Kalahari Desert
Semi-arid Region & Desert
The Kalahari, part of the captivating Botswana landscapes, is actually a semi-arid region, with only certain areas in the west classified as true deserts. Despite this, it boasts a surprisingly vast and diverse array of wildlife and plant life. Its remoteness adds to its charm, making the Kalahari a truly unique safari stop.
Linyanti and Savuti
Wetlands, Grasslands & Savannah Woodland
This natural link between the Okavango and Chobe regions is also remote. Another wilderness escape is Linyanti and Savuti, where there are no fences, allowing the animals to wander freely. Two famous inhabitants are the Linyanti elephants and the Savuti Lions.
Floodplains & Forests
Moremi
The Moremi Game Reserve, in the eastern reaches of the Okavango Delta, has a diverse ecosystem and plenty of wildlife. Most of Moremi is covered in water, and the best time to visit is during the dry season when the delta becomes an oasis for wildlife.
