Most images of Amboseli National Park feature herds of elephants crossing the plains, with the towering, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of free-ranging elephants and is also home to buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and various plains game and predators such as lion and hyena. Safari visitors can also see the endangered black rhino and many other wildlife species.
The park is easily accessible by road and by air, and an Amboseli safari combines well with a visit to Tsavo National Park in Kenya and Kilimanjaro and Arusha in Tanzania. Despite being Kenya’s second most visited safari park, Amboseli offers intimate wildlife viewing opportunities. Animals display relaxed attitudes around vehicles, resulting in spectacular close-up encounters.
Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s smaller parks. It features mostly flat plains covered with low scrub vegetation and groves of yellow-fever trees. At the centre of the park, subterranean streams originating on Mount Kilimanjaro’s surface create large swamp areas that attract a rich diversity of animals and birdlife. The short, sparse vegetation makes animals fairly easy to spot, while a visit to the swamps will offer spectacular sightings of the animals that come to drink.
