Laikipia National Park

Laikipia National Park Safaris

Discover
Kenya’s Hidden Safari Gem

Nestled in Kenya’s central highlands, the vast Laikipia Plateau stretches from the foothills of Mount Kenya in the east to the stunning expanse of the Rift Valley in the west. Impressively, it ranks second only to Tsavo National Park in size, encompassing about 9,500 square kilometres of pristine wilderness.

Over the years, Laikipia Plateau has increasingly been recognized as a top safari destination in Kenya. Featuring an extraordinary wildlife density that is surpassed only by the Masai Mara, the plateau is a haven for an array of rare and endangered species, including the black rhino, Grevy’s zebra, wild dog, and sitatunga. Moreover, what distinguishes Laikipia safaris is the absence of large tourist crowds and the flexibility afforded by minimal national park regulations. As a result, visitors can partake in a broader range of wildlife activities, such as walking safaris, camel rides, and horse riding, offering deeper immersion into the natural landscape.

Originally, the area was composed of privately owned cattle ranches, but Laikipia has since transformed into a unique patchwork of private and communal lands. This land, now largely owned by ranchers, local Maasai, and Samburu communities, has united into a significant conservation area. Consequently, most private ranches have transitioned into exclusive game reserves.

Laikipia’s
History & Origin

Originally, the area was composed of privately owned cattle ranches, but Laikipia has since transformed into a unique patchwork of private and communal lands. This land, now largely owned by ranchers, local Maasai, and Samburu communities, has united into a significant conservation area. Consequently, most private ranches have transitioned into exclusive game reserves.

Furthermore, because Laikipia’s lands are privately owned, visitors are not bound by the usual constraints of national park regulations, which creates opportunities for a more personalized and immersive safari experience. Here, in the heart of Kenya’s central highlands, the vast Laikipia Plateau unfolds from the majestic slopes of Mount Kenya to the edges of the Great Rift Valley. This breathtaking landscape, second in size only to Tsavo, offers a sanctuary for an incredible density of wildlife, including endangered species.

Additionally, in Laikipia, the safari experience extends beyond traditional game drives. With options like walking safaris, camel treks, and horseback excursions, visitors are invited to explore Kenya’s untamed wilderness in an intimate and unforgettable manner.
