Nestled in the heart of Rwanda, Kigali, the largest city and capital, is located almost exactly at the centre of the country. This dynamic city has been the economic, cultural, and transport hub of Rwanda since it was named the nation’s capital in 1962.
Situated in a hilly area, Kigali encompasses four ridges and the valleys in between. As the city grows rapidly, its limits are spreading further up the slopes of the surrounding higher hills. Despite the difficult times during the genocide in 1994, Kigali has made a remarkable recovery and is now an attractive and pleasant city to visit. While poverty is still widespread, the local people are warm and friendly, and the city is generally considered to be one of the safest African capitals.
Most Rwanda safari holidays begin and/or end in Kigali. While there isn’t a wide range of accommodation here, it is worth spending a night or two to explore this vibrant city. The clean and safe city centre has a number of excellent attractions, including bustling markets where you can purchase colourful handicrafts. The genocide memorial is also well worth a visit, providing a moving and enlightening glimpse into Rwanda’s past.
