Nestled along the eastern border of Rwanda, Lake Kivu stands as a tranquil retreat amidst the Albertine Rift of the Great Rift Valley. This vast expanse of water, covering around 2,700 square kilometres, is a haven for adventurers and peace-seekers alike. Separating Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu lies in an area of tectonic divergence and empties into the Ruzizi River, which feeds into another of Africa’s great lakes, Lake Tanganyika.
From the sandy shores of Gisenyi to the picturesque hills of Kibuye, Lake Kivu offers an array of activities amidst its tropical beaches and watersport opportunities. Gisenyi, the largest city on the shores of Lake Kivu, is known for its sandy beaches and variety of watersports, making it an excellent tourist destination. Visitors can find a range of beachfront accommodation, bustling marketplaces, quaint tree-lined streets, and even the only brewery in Rwanda. Gisenyi is ideally located as a stopover for travellers heading to or from Volcanoes National Park.
Another great town to visit on Lake Kivu’s shores is Kibuye. Stretching over a series of eucalyptus and pine-covered hillsides, Kibuye is fast becoming a popular destination, thanks to the newly constructed road from Kigali. As a gateway to Volcanoes National Park and a sanctuary of natural beauty, Lake Kivu is an essential stop for any traveller exploring the heart of Africa.
