Stretching 200km along the southern Cape, this area boasts some of the richest marine reserves. Here, Southern Right whales come to breed, Great White Sharks feed, and the African sardine run begins. The Whale Coast and Overberg provide visitors with the opportunity to experience aquatic activities unique to this region.
The bustling seaside town of Hermanus is known as the “whale-watching capital of the world.” During the breeding season (June to November), Southern Right whales migrate to the coastal waters of the Cape to calve and nurse their young. Visitors can see them just a few metres from the shore, offering excellent photo opportunities. This humbling experience is less than a two-hour drive from Cape Town and is well worth the excursion. Besides whale watching, Hermanus offers boat trips, kayaking, hiking trails, beaches, and wine estates.
Further along the coast lies Gansbaai, one of the few places where visitors can view Great White Sharks in their natural habitat and even enter the water in protective cages for a closer look.
Beyond Hermanus is the Grootbos Nature Reserve, home to over 740 species of plant life. Overlooking Walker Bay, Grootbos offers whale viewing by land, boat, or air. Other activities include flower safaris, birding tours, horse riding, 4×4 drives, and walks along deserted beaches, ideal for children.
The De Hoop Nature Reserve, a marine protected area, encompasses the breeding grounds of the Southern Right whale. Its high sand dunes provide excellent vantage points for whale viewing. Covering 34,000 hectares, De Hoop offers a complete outdoor experience with sea, sand dunes, indigenous plants, and diverse wildlife. Off the coast of De Hoop lies the Agulhas shelf, the starting point for the famous sardine run.
