Madikwe Game Reserve, covering 76,000 hectares, is one of South Africa’s largest game reserves. Established in 1991 through the reclamation of farmland, it was restored to its natural environment. The reserve’s success story includes Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation project, which reintroduced over 8,000 animals of 28 species.
Today, Madikwe’s diverse landscapes of grasslands, bushveld, rocky outcrops, and lone mountains are home to a wide range of wildlife, including elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions, buffaloes, wild dogs, zebras, giraffes, various antelope species, and over 300 resident and migrant bird species.
Madikwe is unique for its joint venture between the government, private sector, and local communities, working together in a mutually beneficial partnership in conservation.
