Western Corridor (Grumeti River & Sasakwa)

Western Corridor Safari

Witness the Migration

and Thriving Wilds of the Serengeti Crossing

Discover thrilling wildlife encounters at the Serengeti crossing in the scenic Western Corridor of the Serengeti. Follow the Great Wildebeest Migration as it crosses the Grumeti River, explore captivating landscapes, and uncover resident herds year-round.

The Western Corridor stretches approximately 80 kilometres, following the Grumeti River to Lake Victoria. This beautiful area is characterised by dense acacia stands, thick woodlands, and vast open plains framed by hills. The Grumeti River presents the first significant aquatic challenge for migrating herds during the Serengeti crossing.

The Grumeti River – famous for the Serengeti crossing is a dominant feature of the Western Corridor and is infamous for its crocodile population. From late May to mid-July, thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes cross the river during their northward migration, creating one of the most spectacular safari experiences. The corridor serves as a wet/dry transitional zone, with a large herd of resident wildebeest, numbering around 50,000, remaining year-round.

In addition to wildebeest, the Western Corridor hosts significant numbers of giraffes, buffaloes, impalas, topis, elands, Thomson’s gazelles, and waterbucks. These residents support large predator populations, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas, which are frequently sighted.

The Western Corridor is the second-best region in the Serengeti for resident game, after Central Serengeti, making it a year-round safari destination. From late May to mid-July, the corridor offers exceptional wildlife viewing as the Wildebeest Migration passes through.

Crossings are unpredictable. Herds may gather at the riverbanks for hours or days before deciding to cross. Spending several days in the area increases the likelihood of witnessing this spectacle. While witnessing Serengeti crossing is a remarkable experience, it’s essential to prioritize the well-being of the wildlife. Maintaining a respectful distance and minimizing disturbances ensures the animals can continue their natural behaviors without undue stress.
