Lake Mburo National Park, one of Uganda’s smaller parks, covers an area of only 250 square kilometres. Despite its size, the park features a variety of habitats, from lakes and open savannah grasslands to remarkable wetland environments.
Named after the largest of the five lakes in the park, Lake Mburo is just a four-hour drive from Uganda’s capital, Kampala. It is frequently visited by travellers driving to Bwindi to see the mountain gorillas, as it is halfway between the two locations. Although it is the most accessible of Uganda’s parks, it remains one of the least visited.
While the Big Five are not found in Lake Mburo, the park offers an excellent wildlife safari experience. The savannah grasslands, bush thickets, and rolling hillsides are home to various animals, including Uganda’s only impala population. Birdwatching around the lakes and wetlands, which make up one-fifth of the park, is spectacular, with over 300 species of birds. Along the shores of Lake Mburo, you are likely to spot hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, and various antelope.
The History of
Lake Mburo
Named after the largest of the five lakes in the park, Lake Mburo is just a four-hour drive from Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
