  • The Guidebook to a Botswana Safari with Desert & Delta Safaris

Clive Murray, one of our Senior African Travel Experts, recently embarked on an unforgettable 7- day safari through Botswana, staying at several Desert & Delta Safaris properties including: Chobe Game Lodge, Savute Safari Lodge, Nxamaseri Island Lodge and Leroo La Tau. Clive shares his experience at this property as well as his insights and recommendations for travellers going to Botswana on safari.

    About Desert & Delta Safaris

Desert & Delta Safaris is one of Botswana’s most established and respected safari operators, offering a range of luxury lodges and camps in prime wildlife areas such as the Okavango DeltaChobe National Park, and Savute. The company was established in 1982 and with over 40 years in the industry, they now have 9 properties in their expanding portfolio, all of which are run by local citizens.

Renowned for its personalised service, the company ensures guests have unforgettable experiences while maintaining a strong commitment to conservation and responsible tourism. By working closely with local communities and wildlife organisations, they help preserve Botswana’s natural beauty. With expert guides offering deep insights into the region’s wildlife, landscapes, and culture – Desert & Delta Safaris delivers a truly exceptional safari experience for a Botswana safari.

    Chobe Game Lodge

Botswana has always held a special place in my heart, having visited this country several times before. While the wildlife and landscapes are usually a crowd favourite, for me, the country’s warm-hearted, kind, and welcoming people are one of the main reasons I was so excited to return on my recent visit.

I started my trip at Chobe Game Lodge, one of the only permanent lodges situated on the banks of the Chobe River within the iconic Chobe National Park. After lunch, we headed out on a water safari, boarding an incredibly comfortable aluminum boat fitted with an electric engine and a roof made entirely of solar panels, reinforcing the lodge’s strong commitment to sustainability. What makes this lodge especially unique is that it boasts the first-ever all-female guiding team, aptly named the ‘Chobe Angels.’ If you find yourself in the Chobe region, I highly recommend a water safari, as it provides unobstructed views and the best chance of remarkable wildlife sightings. We witnessed an overwhelming number of elephants congregating at the water’s edge, along with various hippos lazing in the river and other species, offering a perspective you wouldn’t typically get on a traditional game drive.

    Savute Safari Lodge

Logistically there was a light aircraft flight to Savuti Airstrip and here a friendly local guide greeted us and made sure the airstrip was clear of any wandering wildlife as we landed. Savute Safari Lodge, having recently completed an impressive 7-month refurbishment, looks fantastic. The rooms are spacious and modern, featuring convenient USB ports by the bedside lamp, and mosquito nets that glide along rails, creating a cosy sanctuary with an effective, quiet fan overhead.

One of the lodge’s standout new features is the beautifully designed hide, which overlooks a waterhole where elephants frequently gather to drink in the early mornings and afternoons. Guests can also explore ancient San rock paintings nearby, and the lodge offers front-row access to the second-largest zebra migration in Africa. This incredible spectacle occurs between November and December, and again from February to April.

    Nxamaseri Island Lodge

The next day, we flew to Nxamaseri Island Lodge, located in the permanent water channels of the Delta. This was, without a doubt, my favourite camp of all time. The lodge features nine chalets, all nestled among Jackalberry trees, which also provide shade over the communal dining and lounge areas.

We had the opportunity to visit the lodge’s newest addition—a sleep-out experience under the stars, set to open later this month. The sleep-out is located in the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to over 4,000 rock art drawings and a short distance from these significant quartzite rock formations. This offers a unique chance to immerse yourself in Botswana’s rich culture and heritage while exploring the lesser-known parts of the region. We were then whisked back to the lodge by helicopter.

One of the many rock paintings we saw at Tsodilo Hills.

The following morning, we went on a mokoro safari and, as we rounded a bend, were greeted by the entire camp staff singing ‘Two by Two,’ which quickly became our theme song. A hot breakfast was prepared over an open fire, accompanied by delicious coffee. This was such a special moment that I will never forget.

    Leroo La Tau

On the final leg of our trip, we stayed at Leroo La Tau, where we were once again greeted by the warm and welcoming locals, with singing and dancing upon our arrival. After flying into Leroo La Tau, we were treated to another beautiful song as we arrived at the lodge. The rooms are light, spacious, and come with a deck offering a view of hundreds of zebras drinking from the pumped waterholes.

Each afternoon, endless lines of zebras gather at these waterholes. My only disappointment was not having enough time to experience the Sleep Out on the Makgadikgadi Pans. Guests have the opportunity to visit the wildlife-rich Nxai Pans on a day trip or venture out onto the breathtaking Makgadikgadi Salt Pans for an unforgettable night under a blanket of stars, accompanied by a dedicated guide.

  • The Guidebook to Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve

Zannon James, one of our African Travel Experts, recently spent a week in Greater Kruger and one of the reserves he visited was the renowned Sabi Sabi Game Reserve, which borders Kruger National Park and is known for its abundant wildlife. Zannon offers valuable insights on making the most of your Greater Kruger safari in South Africa.

Upon landing at Skukuza airstrip, I met my driver and began the first leg of my Greater Kruger safari. After a quick itinerary overview, we headed to Sabi Sands, a private reserve adjacent to Kruger. The drive to the luxurious Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge felt like a game drive itself, with sightings of giraffes, impala, and more as we entered the reserve.

Welcome gift at Sabi Sabi with Safari365
The welcome gift I received upon arrival at Sabi Sands Bush Lodge.

    About Sabi Sabi

Sabi Sabi is a family-owned and run establishment that started in 1979. Since its inception, it has made a name for itself due to its wide offerings, incredible location, and commitment to both wildlife conservation and its staff. Lourens, the lodge manager at Sabi Sabi Little Bush, passionately reminded me of the lodge ethos—a philosophy that honours the past, embraces the present, and aims for a sustainable future. This commitment to preserving the wilderness while providing exceptional guest experiences was clear throughout my Greater Kruger safari.

Each lodge within the collection has its own unique character. Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge, where I stayed, is a refined and elegant retreat perfect for families and larger groups. The oldest lodge in their collection offers spacious suites and a lively communal atmosphere. Selati Camp is a nostalgic choice for history enthusiasts, evoking the charm of old-world safaris. Little Bush Camp offers a more intimate setting, ideal for small groups and multi-generational families seeking peace and quiet. Lastly, Earth Lodge provides contemporary luxury with an eco-conscious design, perfect for couples and honeymooners looking for a high-end escape in the bush.

    What Was The Wildlife Like?

My guide, Macs, was an energetic young safari ranger with a deep knowledge of the African wilderness, paired with JP, a seasoned tracker with an incredible eye for detail. Together, they made an unbeatable team, ensuring an unforgettable safari.

Our first game drive far exceeded my expectations. As we entered the reserve, the excitement of being on safari kicked in. Macs quickly spotted two male lions lounging in the afternoon sun, their golden fur stark against the green plains. Nearby, a pride of lions, including four adult females and seven playful cubs, rested in the distance. Later, following tracks expertly identified by JP, we encountered something extraordinary—a beautiful leopard enjoying an impala kill. As if that wasn’t enough, two more leopards, possibly her offspring, emerged from the undergrowth. Seeing three leopards in one sighting is incredibly rare and showcased the exceptional wildlife viewing that Sabi Sands is known for especially on a Greater Kruger safari.

My incredible guide and tracker Macs and JP.

Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we came across a herd of buffalo, their massive horns a testament to their strength. As we headed back to the lodge, a herd of elephants, including incredibly young calves just days old, crossed our path, ending the day on a high note.

Staying in a game reserve like this, with unfenced borders to Kruger National Park, offers the same or even better game viewing but with fewer people, resulting in a more intimate experience. Another advantage is the opportunity for night game drives, exclusive to private reserves. This must-do experience allows you to witness nocturnal wildlife with your guide and tracker, providing a unique perspective on Kruger’s wildlife.

My Stay at Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge

Staying at Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge was about more than just the amazing wildlife—though that was definitely a highlight. What really stood out to me was the luxury and personalised service. My suite, tucked among the trees, offered incredible views of the bush. The décor was a mix of colonial elegance and modern comfort, with handcrafted furniture and luxurious textiles that blended seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The lodge had a lively communal atmosphere, perfect for families and groups, while each suite still provided privacy for a peaceful experience in the wilderness.

One standout aspect of the lodge is the gourmet cuisine, focusing on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed meals in stunning locations, including a memorable dinner under the stars. The lodge features a majestic boma with a crackling fire at its centre, creating a magical atmosphere as the flames lit up the faces of fellow guests and staff.

The lodge strikes a great balance between exciting game drives and pure relaxation. The lodge has a gym, two pools, a safari deck, and the Amani Spa. Most mornings began with an exhilarating game drive, followed by a refreshing swim in one of their two pools. The afternoons were spent on the deck, sharing stories and drinks with other guests as the sun set.

A highlight of my stay was an interactive drumming session, where staff taught us to play traditional African drums. The rhythmic beats were a beautiful reflection of South African culture, making it an unforgettable experience.

    Overall Thoughts of Your Stay?

Overall, my stay was incredible, and a huge thank you to the lodge and their team for having me. This reserve offered exceptional wildlife encounters, luxurious accommodations, and warm hospitality made for an unforgettable experience. With its dedication to conservation and commitment to guest satisfaction and has truly earned its reputation as one of Africa’s premier safari destinations.

  • The Guidebook to The Peech Hotel: Johannesburg

One of our valued staff members – Lisa – recently visited the fabulous Peech Hotel in Johannesburg and is pleased to provide her first hand feedback and insider tips.

    Location

The property is conveniently located just 2 or 3 blocks from the famous Melrose Arch precinct, with a park situated directly across the road. Although I was on a self-drive and found it easily using Google Maps, you will typically be transferred by one of our knowledgeable Safari365 representatives, who are very familiar with the area. During the day, it’s an easy stroll to Melrose Arch to explore the shops and restaurants, though it might feel a bit too far for an evening walk.

    Accommodation

This isn’t a typical hotel with a central reception and lifts to bedroom floors above. Instead, the reception and restaurant are housed in the main building, while the guest rooms are nestled within the gardens, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely stroll through a serene two-acre setting.

I stayed in one of the classic rooms on the ground floor. There are 14 classic rooms in total, spread across the ground and first floors. All were renovated in the past year, each featuring unique colour schemes, though the overall décor and furniture are consistent throughout. What I particularly enjoyed was the ability to open the double wooden doors onto a private terrace, offering a sense of seclusion. Despite the garden setting, you still feel very much in a city hotel. The first-floor rooms benefit from spacious balconies, each furnished with two chairs and a table. The rooms are thoughtfully equipped with heaters in the bathroom and bedroom, heated towel rails, and electric blankets, ensuring you’re always warm, even in winter.

I also had the opportunity to view the two-bedroom family villa in the centre of the property, as well as the luxury rooms and suites. The décor throughout the rooms and the villa is beautifully done. The two suites, each measuring 65 square metres, are located on the first floor and offer stunning views of the meticulously landscaped gardens. I was informed that they will soon be adding an organic food and herb garden, which will be a lovely addition.

The rooms of The Peech Hotel with Safari365
The Peech Hotel has a total of 32 rooms.

    Dining

There is a six-course fine dining restaurant called Basalt, which is open three times a week. When we checked in, I was informed that the restaurant was fully booked, so I do recommend pre-booking as it is open to the public.

I had dinner at the stylish in-house bistro, which is exclusively for in-house guests. There was a cosy fireplace in the corner, perfect for the cooler winter evening. The menu choice is relatively small; however, it covers all dietary requirements. I enjoyed a delicious tomato and basil pasta paired with a Bouchard Finlayson wine. I visited in winter, but if the weather is pleasant, I would suggest dining outside in the garden among the lush greenery.

The leisurely breakfast is à la carte, offering a wide variety of dishes, from healthy choices like granola, fresh fruit, and yoghurt to heartier options such as eggs Benedict, omelettes, and freshly baked pastries. You can sit on the wide, shady terrace and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, or in the indoor dining area. We had the friendliest waitress, who really made us feel welcome. The ambience is relaxed yet sophisticated, making it a perfect start to the day.

Breakfast offered at The Peech Hotel with Safari365
Wonderful breakfast options offered at the hotel.

    Recreational Facilities

There are 2 refreshing swimming pools, which further enhances the guest experience, for a more relaxing and enjoyable experience. There were many umbrellas and sun loungers for comfort.

The outside pool amenities at the hotel offering a wonderful way to unwind.

A cosy lounge near the reception area was available, with a roaring fire welcoming me upon arrival. Right next door, there’s a Planet Fitness gym, so if you’re in the mood to exercise, you can easily join a class or two.

    Overall Thoughts of Your Stay?

What really stood out to me was how quiet it was. You didn’t hear voices or have people walking past your room down a corridor like a normal hotel. So for those who prefer a bit more peace and tranquillity, then this is for you.

The lush outside area providing a tranquility to your stay.

All the staff were so welcoming and friendly from the reception staff to the waitrons and even when we were parking the car, the security made us feel so at home. Staff are attentive, friendly, and quick to address any needs that I had, reflecting a well-managed and organised establishment. I also feel that the hotel management and all the staff maintain a high standard of service and hospitality.

Gabrielle the General Manager showed me around the property and what was so evident is the emphasis on sustainability and responsible tourism and they were recently re-accredited with Fair Trade Tourism and have been members since 2010.

Gabrielle, the General Manager, showing me around the property.

The property is celebrating their 20th anniversary in November, but all the rooms look almost brand new, which to me means it reflects a commitment to quality, cleanliness, and attention to detail. Outdoor spaces, including gardens, patios, and courtyards, are well-kept, with trimmed plants, clean furniture, and inviting seating areas.

The Peech was described by Condé Nast Traveller as “Contemporary, edgy and Afrocentric”, and has been nominated as South Africa’s Leading Boutique Hotel for the last six consecutive years. I can most certainly see why and I did notice a lot of award certificates on the wall by the reception desk. To sum it up I really recommend The Peech and I am proud that Safari365 works with a property that makes such an effort and has attention to detail and our clients will have such an enjoyable stay.

  •  The Guidebook to Serengeti Safari Lodges: Serengeti Pioneer Camp

One of our Safari365 Consultants enjoyed a stay at a Serengeti safari lodge, Serengeti Pioneer Camp, in Tanzania during a recent staff educational trip. She visited the tented camp located in the heart of the Serengeti, where she experienced the camp’s hospitality and activities. Here are her highlights of staying at Serengeti safari lodges.

     Serengeti Pioneer Camp

After a long drive through the savanna landscape, we arrived at this little haven hidden away between the rocky kopjes, blending beautifully with the surrounding nature. Elewana Collection’s Serengeti Pioneer Camp is a tented camp nestled in the heart of the Southern Central Serengeti, one of the incredible Serengeti safari lodges in this area. The location offers prime access to wildlife viewing, especially during the annual Great Migration when it passes through.

    Location

When we visited, the camp was tucked into a prime spot nearby the Meru Kopjes. The Serengeti was named “endless plains” in the Maasai language for a clear reason – the rolling savanna, dotted with iconic acacia trees, stretched out as far as my eyes could see. The location of the camp was a great place for excellent game viewing with resident prides of lion as well as leopard often being spotted in the area. The area around the camp transforms from flat grassland landscape to the hilly, rocky kopje.

    Accommodation

The camp’s tents are spaced out beneath the hills, with the main dining tent at the foot of the kopje. Upon arrival, we received warm welcomes from the friendly staff. Every staff member I encountered at Pioneer Camp was attentive, helpful, and had a positive attitude. Their service truly epitomises what you can expect from a high-quality lodge in Central Serengeti. The interior design of the tents reflected memories of a bygone safari era, with bespoke wooden furnishings, writing stations, wooden trunks, and old-school safari hats.

    Activities

In the evening, we made our way to the main dining tent and enjoyed a great meal. After dinner was one of my highlights. We sat next to the campfire, warming our hands as the logs crackled and the sparks danced through the night air. The star-filled sky twinkled above our heads while we listened to the faint sounds of wildlife in the distance.

The next day began with a hot cup of coffee and an early rise for a morning game drive where we were guided through the sights of the surrounding Serengeti. After the morning game drive activity, you can come back to enjoy lunch and take a relaxing dip in the pool or spend some time relaxing in your tent, before the late afternoon game drive. Staying at this lodge offers unparalleled opportunities for game drives and wildlife viewing.

    Overall Thoughts of Your Stay?

Serengeti safari lodges are known for their prime locations and excellent hospitality. Pioneer Camp, in particular, is a lovely destination—one of my favourites in Tanzania—with a great, warm atmosphere. It offers the most amazing views and spectacular sunrises and sunsets that will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or simply curious about the origins of your favorite brew, our curated coffee tours will provide an unparalleled insider’s perspective into the world of East African coffee.

As is the case with wine, the quality of coffee depends on the terroir (the soil, topography, and climate in which it is grown). Coffee trees only thrive in tropical and subtropical climates. These areas stretch across the equator, forming a ‘coffee belt’. Africa’s many different coffee regions produce beans known for being fruity, sweet, and floral. Some of the most well-known regions are KenyaTanzania, and Rwanda.

East African coffee tours provide a fascinating insight into the region’s rich coffee culture and production process.

  • Guidebook to African Bucket List Destinations

Whether it’s navigating a mokoro canoe safari through the winding channels of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, watching the sun rise over the Serengeti National Park, or summiting the snowy peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro—Africa is a wanderluster’s dream.

Here is our list of African bucket list experiences that should be on every bucket list!

    Top African Bucket List Activities

    See Victoria Falls

Witness the majesty of Victoria Falls! Hailed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke that Thunders) is the world’s largest sheet of falling water. It can be accessed from both Zambia and Zimbabwe. Visiting Victoria Falls offers an awe-inspiring experience filled with natural beauty, adventure, and cultural insights.

    Mokoro Through the Okavango Delta

Experience Botswana’s Okavango Delta as it was meant to be experienced–from a dugout canoe called a mokoro. The Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s largest inland deltas, and known for its richness and diversity of wildlife particularly during the winter months. The poler pushes against the riverbed to move the canoe forward. This method of propulsion is silent and gentle, causing minimal disturbance to the water and wildlife. The quiet movement of a mokoro allows for excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Passengers can often see animals such as hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and a variety of birds up close.

    Climb Africa’s Highest Mountain, Kilimanjaro

Summiting Kilimanjaro is a significant personal achievement and an African bucket list item for many adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts. In Ernest Hemmingway’s famous short story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”, he describes Africa’s highest peak as “wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun”, a fitting description for the Masai named Ngaje Ngai, or the House of God. The trek offers breathtaking views of the surrounding plains, valleys, and neighboring mountains. The sunrise from the summit, Uhuru Peak, is particularly spectacular.

However, visiting the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania for a half day or full day game drive, offers a unique and unforgettable experience due to its remarkable natural beauty, diverse wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact volcanic caldera. Its formation around two to three million years ago after a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself makes it a fascinating geological feature.

The Ngorongoro Crater is home to approximately 25,000 large animals, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros). The concentration and variety of wildlife make it one of the best places for game viewing.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty.

Witness the Magic of Africa’s Gorillas | Uganda or Rwanda

Anyone who has ever been to Uganda or Rwanda to see the gorillas, will tell you that it’s more than just a picture moment for the travel album–it’s an awe-inspiring experience that brings us face-to-face to our closest animal relatives. This is truly unforgettable and this once-in-a-lifetime experience offers a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
