Cape Peninsula

A trip around the Cape Peninsula is an ever popular Cape Town day tour. Travel from the city to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. Cape Point Nature Reserve is perfect for nature lovers; the reserve is home to stunning flora and fauna as well as ruggedly dramatic scenery. While here, visit Cape Point – the most south western point in South Africa, take a stroll along Dias Beach; and admire Cape Point Lighthouse either by hiking or taking a trip on the ferry.

During a tour through the Cape Peninsula, highlights include Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Simon’s Town, and Boulder’s Beach, which is home to colonies of adorable African Penguins.

A Cape Peninsula day trip is filled with breathtaking natural scenery, interesting culture, and history. A drive along Chapman’s Peak and through Hout Bay at sunset is the perfect way to end a spectacular adventure.

Whale Coast and Hermanus

Located 90 minutes from Cape Town, along the Cape Whale Coast Route, is the charming seaside town of Hermanus. The town is famous for being a prime whale watching destination. From July to November, pods of whales migrate along the whale coast, with September- November being the best time for viewing. Visitors are almost guaranteed to see a few spouts, fins, and tails!  The area also provides mating and breeding grounds for the Southern Right Whale. While watching for whales, keep an eye out for the town Whale Crier and his conch shell!

There are a number of things to see and do while in Hermanus. Embark on the cliff, walk along the coastline, explore the town, and enjoy the markets, cafes, and restaurants. You can even enjoy a meal in a restaurant carved into a cave at Beintang’s Cave.

If you have more time in the area, further away from the centre of town, visit Fernkloof Nature Reserve or experience the delicious delights of the Hemel en Aarde Wine Valley.

Cape Winelands

A day spent enjoying the sights and sampling the tastes of the Cape Winelands is a quintessential experience to have when visiting the Western Cape. South Africa is famed for producing world-class wines, and the Cape Winelands are the heart of wine production in the country. Towns such as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are the perfect destinations for exploring award-winning wineries in the surrounding valleys.

Lucy Brink, our General Manager at Safari365, recently went on a 6-night educational trip to 3 of African Bush Camp’s properties: Khwai Lediba, Linyanti Bush Camp, and Thorntree River Lodge. Read on about her first-hand experience and insights for a Botswana safari and her visit to Victoria Falls.

From a young age in the UK, I was captivated by Botswana, inspired by David Attenborough’s documentaries of the Okavango Delta’s vibrant wildlife. Botswana’s untouched beauty seemed a stark contrast to my urban life.

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit three lodges in Botswana and Victoria Falls with African Bush Camps. This experience prompted the common question: is Botswana worth the higher cost? I believe it is, and here’s why.

Why should you experience a Botswana Safari? 

Botswana promotes a ‘slow safari’ tourism model: “low impact, high value.” The government limits tourist numbers to reduce environmental impact while ensuring a premium experience. This includes strict sustainable practices, like solar-powered lodges that must be dismantled without a trace once leases expire. Camps often have high staff-to-guest ratios (about 3:1), contributing to higher operational costs. 

Additionally, transporting supplies and maintaining remote camps is costly. These factors, combined with high demand and limited accommodation, explain the higher prices. However, this model ensures a sustainable future for Botswana safari experiences, protecting the wildlife and communities for generations to come.

Introducing African Bush Camps

African Bush Camps (ABC), founded by Zimbabwean guide Beks Ndlovu in 2006, is a prominent safari operator in Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Known for their authentic approach and community projects through the ABC Foundation.

As I left Cape Town for Maun, Botswana’s tourism gateway, I anticipated six nights across three camps in two countries. I was eager to see how a Botswana safari compared to my South African experiences and whether a luxury lodge near Victoria Falls was worth it.

On the flight, the scenery transformed from South Africa’s urban sprawl to Namibia’s sandy deserts and Botswana’s green bushveld. Maun’s airport, bustling with safari tourists, was our entry point to the Okavango Delta. We boarded a Wilderness Air flight to Khwai, known for its scenic safaris. 

As we boarded the snug, hot aircraft, I realized the importance of a handheld fan. Despite the heat, the mesmerizing aerial views and spotting elephants made it worthwhile. After landing at Khwai Airstrip, we transferred to Khwai Lediba camp, welcomed by singing staff and lemon-scented towels.

Khwai Lediba 

Khwai Lediba, opened in June 2023, is a solar-powered, unfenced camp with modern designs and colorful accents. The luxury tents were comfortable and surprisingly cool at night, even without air conditioning.

We spent two fantastic days on our Botswana safari with our guide Gilbert and a trainee guide, Tsidi. ABC’s commitment to empowering women in various roles was evident throughout my trip. As we explored Khwai and Moremi, Gilbert shared fascinating insights about local plant uses and the many uses of elephant dung, from eco-friendly paper to tea for easier childbirth.

Wildlife highlights included tracking a pack of 19 wild dogs making a kill outside camp, following two lion prides with cubs, and seeing elephants, hippos, jackals, waterbuck, impala, baboons, and a variety of birdlife. Although leopards are harder to spot, one was seen by another vehicle. My personal highlight was experiencing a mokoro ride, gliding through shallow reeds and passing beautiful water lilies. The day ended with a memorable sundowner by the river, watching a stunning Botswana sunset.

We also visited the Khwai pre-school, an ABC Foundation project. Previously, children had to travel hours for school, but now, with the Foundation’s help, they have access to education and meals closer to home. The kids were thrilled to see us.

Linyanti Bush Camp 

On day three, we headed to Linyanti, a private concession on the Chobe National Park border. After a 25-minute flight and an 8-minute scenic helicopter ride, we arrived at Linyanti Bush Camp. This ABC Signature camp can be accessed by helicopter or a 2-hour road transfer, offering a mix of aerial and ground game-viewing experiences.

If you’ve never flown by helicopter, it’s a bucket-list activity. Our helicopter ride over the Chobe River provided spectacular views of Namibia’s vast plains and Botswana’s lush bushveld. Linyanti, close to the river, is ideal for year-round wildlife viewing and birdwatching. For an added thrill, consider a doors-off scenic helicopter flip.

Linyanti is a short drive from the Chobe National Park, which spans 110,000 hectares, dwarfing Linyanti’s 110 hectares. Though water-based activities were unavailable during our visit due to low levels, plan a visit from June onwards if these activities are a priority.

Linyanti delivered incredible wildlife sightings, including an unforgettable night drive on our Botswana safari. We enjoyed sundowners at a dam, watching a pod of 30 hippos. Our guide, Chester, was exceptional, sharing his knowledge and humor. We spotted two leopards within 24 hours, including one with an impala kill. Linyanti now boasts a resident pride of nine lions.

Game drives revealed a fascinating array of wildlife: honey badgers, warthogs, impala, lions, waterbuck, giant eagle owls, dwarf mongooses, kudus, fish eagles, elephants, and saddle-billed storks. Bird enthusiasts would enjoy sightings of white-throated bee-eaters, swallow-tailed bee-eaters, and African hoopoe birds.

Chester’s stories added depth to our experience. For example, the high salt content in leadwood trees leads to branch sacrifice after floods, a process linked to initiation rituals. Night drives were thrilling, with sightings of a lioness, fireflies, a serval, side-striped jackal, bush baby, Verreaux’s eagle-owl, and hippos out of the water.

Linyanti is also close to the Chobe National Park gate, allowing for full-day excursions to Savuti. The camp’s rustic bush style, with an “Out of Africa” ambiance, offers a peaceful setting with shady stoops for viewing the plains. It’s best as a first stop to manage expectations before visiting newer, more modern camps. The property also includes Linyanti Ebony and Linyanti Expeditions for a more adventurous experience.

Evenings at Linyanti are magical, with boma dinners, singing, and conversation under the stars. This hidden gem offers an intimate and enriching Botswana safari experience, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

Thorntree River Lodge

We began with a two-hour drive to the airstrip, spotting impala, a leopard, giraffes, warthogs, a python, baboons, and elephants along the way. The 45-minute flight to the efficient Kasane International Airport was seamless. From there, a 25-minute drive took us to Zambia’s Kazungula border, where four countries and two rivers converge. Visa requirements should be checked in advance, and a KAZA multi-entry visa for $50 is cost-effective.

In Zambia, we enjoyed a picturesque hour-long drive to Thorntree in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Thorntree, an ABC ‘Icon’ camp, offers luxurious accommodations on the Zambezi River. The lodge features modern, open designs with plenty of communal areas. Each air-conditioned suite has river views and a plunge pool, ensuring a “wow” factor.

Wildlife roams freely around the unfenced lodge, adding to the authentic Botswana safari experience. Activities include scenic sunset cruises, birdwatching, and a visit to the ABC Foundation’s Khwai pre-school. Rhino tracking was a highlight, with close-up sightings of seven rhinos, made possible by anti-poaching efforts.

The food and drink choices were excellent, with many activities included in the stay. Optional activities, such as bungee jumping and helicopter flips, are available for an additional charge. I enjoyed a hot stone massage at the spa after the flights.

Thorntree offers a luxurious experience with attentive staff, ideal for starting or ending your safari journey. We visited the Maunga Health Centre, supported by the ABC Foundation, which provides essential healthcare to the local community.

The ABC Foundation’s work in conservation, community upliftment, and female empowerment was impressive. Their camps offer varying degrees of luxury, from adventurous Expedition camps to premium Icon camps. ABC camps are family-friendly, with thoughtful details and amenities. Introduction

Lucy Brink, the General Manager of Safari365, recently visited Thorntree River Lodge and provides first-hand feedback.

Thorntree River Lodge was the perfect stop for my final two nights at the end of a longer safari in neighbouring Botswana. However, it would also serve well at the beginning of a trip due to its gentle ‘soft’ bush style (advantageous after leaving a busy city). One of African Bush Camp’s ‘Icon’ camps, which is nestled along the riverbank, its style is modern, warm and open, with plenty of communal areas to relax under the canopy of swaying trees. 

Location of Thorntree River Lodge

Situated on the Zambezi River inside Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, the property is located close to Livingstone, either transfer by road from Livingstone Airport which is approximately 20 minutes drive away, or guests can connect via road over the border from Victoria Falls International Airport, which takes around 90 minutes including around 30 minutes for the border crossing.

For guests coming from Botswana by road or from Kasane International Airport, the Kazungula border post provides the closest access into Zambia. It takes approximately 25 minutes by road from Kasane Airport to the the Kazungula border, then it’s an easy drive to Thorntree.

Accommodation at Thorntree River Lodge

This premium lodge includes 12 spacious luxury suites including 4 which can become 2 separate luxury family suites (these have an adjoining walkway with interleading access). All have roll top baths, an indoor/outdoor shower and plunge pool with views of the Zambezi River. Every luxurious air conditioned suite boasts views of the river and includes a plunge pool – you really get the wow factor on arrival and I could have stayed for a week!

Pool, gym, spa, gift shop, library and outdoor boma for pre-dinner drinks. There are also several areas to relax including a large lounge and separate dining area with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Zambezi River.

Property Activities

Inclusive of each stay includes a tour of the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls (the Zimbabwean side can be viewed during dry season), river cruises, a cultural visit, fishing expedition (excluding December), canoeing, rhino tracking (Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park is the only place in Zambia where you can see White Rhinos), plus bush walks and game drives into Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. There are also optional activities (chargeable) such as guided rainforest walks, bungee jumping and helicopter flips.

Who is it Suitable For? 

Couples, families of all ages, multi generational groups. Although the property is very flat, there are steps down to the jetty for water based experiences.  The property welcomes guests of all ages, and a host of nature and cultural activities are included as part of your stay.

Families are catered for with African Bush Camps Ngwana Club for kids. On arrival kids receive a special bag including a compass, binoculars, sunglasses, colouring books and a wildlife checklist. They also have a dedicated family tour guide who designs activities based around each family group, ranging from nature walks around the lodge, to bush drives and even pizza making.

Highlights 

This property really has a special wow factor. As you walk in you are greeted by the tropical and tranquil setting overlooking the Zambezi River, which feels very private and exclusive. All the communal areas are designed to face the river and boast floor to ceiling glass windows to soak in that magnificent view, as you hear beautiful birdsong. As it’s located within the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, guests can expect to see wildlife wandering close to the lodge, including monkeys, baboons,  elephants and even hippos! (NB guests are escorted back to their rooms at night however there are no predators here). The luxury suites are extremely spacious, well equipped and luxurious. Expect stylish natural wood finishes, a roll top bath and private plunge pool overlooking the river. The bed was gloriously comfy! The staff were gracious and intuitive and the food and activities were excellent. I loved the sunset cruise with sundowners on a small private island – very special!

Finally, it was a privilege to visit 1 of the 13 African Bush Camps Foundation’s projects here: the Maunga Health Centre, which is around a 1 hour drive from the lodge. Here we met several nurses who showed us the health care facility and accommodation built with over US $50,000 worth of donations and support from the ABC Foundation. Fully equipped with an outpatient unit and maternity ward, useful features such as solar power and permanent access to water have ensured essential resources and medical supplies can be provided to the community, who previously had to travel over 20kms for any medical help.

I really enjoyed the ‘behind the scenes’ tour with the General Manager, Helen, who showed us many of the other little secret spots they surprise guests with – from stargazing on their helipad to their herb garden, where guests can pick their own veggies to eat that day. Introduction

One of our travel experts, Zannon, recently embarked on an educational trip to Tanzania to immerse himself in all that the country has to offer, gaining first hand invaluable insights. During his visit, he had the opportunity to enjoy a remarkable stay at Nimali Tarangire. Nimali offers a sanctuary of luxury amidst the untamed beauty of East Africa. Location

Strategically located just outside the Tarangire National Park on the eastern border, Nimali Tarangire is situated within its own private reserve, offering incredible advantages to guests eager to explore this magnificent landscape. With unrivalled access to one of Africa’s most diverse ecosystems, the lodge is perfectly positioned overlooking the seasonal river nestled among the acacia trees and iconic baobabs, providing incredible game viewing throughout the year. Its prime location also offers desirable accessibility, being only 2.5 hours away from the main city of Arusha, making for the perfect start to a northern circuit safari. Its location also makes it a favourable destination to combine a bush and beach safari.

Arrival

As we climbed out of our 4×4 vehicle, we were met with the incredible, soulful singing of the staff, and as we danced and clapped along to the local tune we received much-needed welcome drinks, warm towels to freshen up, and our dusty shoes were whisked away to be cleaned off.

Accommodation

After our heartwarming welcome, we were shown to our accommodation. We stayed in one of the ten elegantly tented suites (which includes 2 family suites). Entering our home for the evening was like stepping into a realm of comfort and elegance. Our incredibly spacious tent was designed to blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings, each fitted with luxury and modern amenities for the discerning traveller. From plush bedding to en-suite bathrooms and private verandas equipped with private plunge pools, overlooking a dry riverbed (which is often a playground for leopards and other cats, so keep a lookout). The decor itself draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, incorporating a blend of contemporary and organic designs with natural materials and artisanal crafts.

While this lodge does make for a great year round destination, I would recommend going in peak season, between 01 June – 31 October, as this is the perfect time to combine Tarangire National Park with a Great Migration safari. These months are also out of the rainy season which makes for optimal game viewing in Tanzania.

Dining Experience

Once we had settled in and freshened up after a long day traversing the Tarangire National Park, we made our way to dinner. We sat under the softly lit lapa and enjoyed an incredible three-course meal inspired by the rich flavours of East Africa and made from the freshest local ingredients.

We started off with a remarkable, fresh tomato soup and crispy fresh bread. I then chose the grilled tilapia (a local type of fish), which was incredible; however, the beef option looked just as tempting, and I would definitely order it if I go back. Lastly, for dessert, we indulged in a delectable chocolate cheesecake drizzled with a home-made berry syrup. I also noted the lodge also caters to all dietary requirements, so feel free to let them know ahead of time what your needs are. 

Activities

We rose with the sun to embark on our first game drive of the day, led by Nimali’s experienced guides. The wildlife was nothing short of incredible, from the majestic elephants and graceful giraffes to elusive big cats and colourful birdlife; the park’s diverse ecosystem never fails to captivate. 

The lodge offers incredible guided walking safaris, which provide a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the breathtaking wildlife and landscapes that surround you. As the lodge is located on its own private property, walking safaris and night game drives are incredibly rare and create a holistic safari experience. The lodge also offers bush picnics and cultural interactions with local communities, all of which I would have loved to experience had we had more time. For those seeking relaxation, visit the lodge’s in-house spa, offering spa therapies and wellness treatments.

 

Property Amenities

Nimali Tarangire boasts a range of amenities designed to enhance your stay, including a swimming pool overlooking the riverbed, a cosy lounge area for relaxation, a boma and a boutique shop offering curated souvenirs.

A hide is also available for those wanting to get up close to the plethora of wildlife and is great for taking incredible photographs. The camp operates sustainably, running solely on solar energy, enforcing a strict no plastics policy, and using its own filtered water in refillable water bottles on the game drives to minimise the environmental impact and support conservation efforts in the region. The lodge also offers battery charging facilities as well as Wi-Fi to its guests.

Personal Thoughts

My time at Nimali Tarangire was nothing short of extraordinary. From the breathtaking landscapes to the unparalleled wildlife encounters, every moment was filled with awe and wonder. The highlights of my trip were definitely the incredible game viewing, as it was unparalleled to anything I have experienced before, and the location of this lodge. The dedication of the staff to providing impeccable, warm, and friendly service, and to preserving the natural beauty of Tarangire National Park, left a lasting impression on me. I left Nimali Tarangire with cherished memories and a profound appreciation for the enchanting wilderness of Tanzania.

I would highly recommend this lodge to families with children aged five or older. The family suites available are great for accommodating families, especially young children. The lodge also offers activities dedicated to children to keep them busy and entertained. This lodge is also perfect for the authentic traveller wanting to immerse themselves in the Tarangire landscape and I would definitely suggest going on a night game drive or guided walk to get the most out of your trip.

Location of Franschhoek Country House & Villas

Franschhoek Country House & Villas is located only 45 minutes from Cape Town city centre and 50 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. We followed the N1 towards Paarl, took the R45 turn-off onto Huguenot Road, and arrived at our home for the night. The hotel’s location allows guests to explore nearby wine farms, and a free shuttle service within the Franschhoek area makes transportation convenient. The provision of a day room for late checkouts and Monneaux Restaurant’s extended kitchen hours for late arrivals reflect a thoughtful approach to guest needs.

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed at reception and escorted to our room. We stayed in their luxury room, which is located separately from the other rooms and offers slightly more space, including a lounge area. We also had a private patio overlooking the courtyard with fountains and the lavender gardens below.

Once we were settled, we headed off to their on-site spa facility. They offer everything from massages, reflexology, facials, manicures, pedicures, and signature treatments. My husband and I indulged in a Top 2 Toe treatment, which was one of the best spa treatments I have ever had.

Dining

In the evening, we made our way to the resident Monneaux restaurant at the hotel, which was truly an exceptional fine dining experience. I had the pleasure of savouring the deboned beef short rib, accompanied by butternut purée, seasonal home-grown vegetables, and dashi jus – a truly sublime experience! Meanwhile, my husband found his lemongrass-glazed pork belly so irresistibly delicious that he was hesitant to share even a single bite. The majority of fresh produce used in the restaurant is cultivated on-site in their gardens.

Besides the incredible restaurant and spa facilities, the hotel also offers two pools, with one of them being heated, as well as the option of a poolside lunch from the restaurant. For more adventurous guests, rent a bicycle and cycle through the charming town of Franschhoek or visit a few of the exceptional wine farms in the region.

Accommodation at Franschhoek Country House & Villas

The hotel offers 6 standard rooms, 5 luxury rooms, 2 garden cottages, and 12 Villa Suites, with most of the rooms featuring an open fireplace. All the en-suite rooms offer all the expected luxuries and amenities, with most rooms providing private balconies, catering to different preferences and family sizes. The availability of pull-out beds and garden cottages adds flexibility for families.

Who is it suitable for?

I would highly recommend this property for couples, families, fine dining enthusiasts, wine enthusiasts, extended stay guests (especially in the Villa Suites), late arrivals, and departure guests. The highlight of our overnight stay would definitely be the Villa-Style layout of the hotel, our incredibly spacious and inviting accommodation, the Monneaux Restaurant, and the perfect proximity to the Cape Winelands.
